Check-up
Our attempt at exclusive breastfeeding didn't work. Kate didn't gain enough weight so the doctor advised us to supplement again with formula. She was only 8.10 lbs at our last check so she only gained 1 oz in 3 days whereas she should gain 1 oz per day to be healthy and thriving.
So, I've been pumping and giving her breast milk and then following up with formula if she is not satisfied. I would say she is getting 70% from me and 30% formula. Today we had a recheck and she now weighs 9.2 lbs! The doctor told me I can continue with the breast milk/formula until she is 6 weeks and then go totally formula. By that time she should have gained the benefits of her mommy's milk.
I have to say that I am really depressed that we couldn't breastfeed. I so wanted it to work out but it didn't. Everyone has told me not to feel guilty but I can't help it. How you feed your baby is a personal choice and I think there is nothing wrong at all with formula it is just that I wanted so badly for breastfeeding to work out. I will admit it will be much easier to go to formula once and for all but I do feel like I am letting Kate down on a good start. However, I must trust that the doc and books are right and the amount of time she has/will get breastfed will still give her some of the benefits against allergies, etc.
